As a journalist I am interested not only in understanding the conflict itself but in the people in it and in the way they handle it – the way they resist it. I focus on social movements, document social ills to give a voice to those who reject violence. As long as it is the most simple way to get the mass medias attention, counter-violence will be used as one of the tools of the oppressed. But if we draw our attention to non-violence and away from violence – if we give a platform to those struggling for peace – such movements will increase, violent ones will decrease.
Armed resistance is easy to use for an oppressor to legitimatize the use of violence and therefore maintain the oppression. Taking this away is what gives non-violent resistance such power.
